New Japanese Nano-tech Increases Optical Media Capacity 1000x PDF Print E-mail

A Tokyo University chemistry professor has announced a new phase transition optical material for data storage.

Simply put, it's based on titanium oxide, is black in one state and brown in the other - therefore fulfilling a binary state. Its low cost and exceedingly small particle size leads to a massive increase in capacity. That increase is currently claimed at "one thousand times that of BluRay".

While that claim is very interesting indeed, it will impractical in a field application (i.e. your lounge room). Here's the easy way to think of it: an average piece of household dust is somewhere between 20 and 70 microns thick and would effectively occlude a large amount of data on the surface of the disc, let alone what a fingerprint would do.

Needless to say, there's a long road ahead if this product is to be commercialised.

More human friendly info here and more hard-core chemistry geek goodness here.

Friday Unfunny PDF Print E-mail

Usually, we like to publicise something entertaining on Friday so that you can have a giggle before the weekend.

Regrettably, this post is quite unfunny.

It seems that IBM passed out USB drives infected with malware at a conference.

We want to assure all USB buyers that all Red Circle Media USB drives are malware free - guaranteed.

We have our own QA staff which go to the manufacturers in Asia and individually test each drive. Defective drives or drives containing material other than the client's desired content causes the shipment to be halted. The result is that all USB drives from Red Circle Media are clean and perfect, every time. This is a claim which the cheapest suppliers cannot make because they merely supply product made by the lowest bidder and don't have their own staff check either here or at the source - quite unconscionable!

Don't try to be cheap on USB drives. Chances are you're going to experience a PR disaster and needless expense.

Check here for more information from the original news source about IBM's woes.
